In spite of its claim to being the ‘Yoga Capital of the World,’ Rishikesh is a quieter and more easy going big city. Surrounded by hills on three sides, it lies at 356 metres. The holy river Ganges (almost clear here) flows through the town and there are many ashrams on its sandy banks. This is an excellent place to stay & study Yoga, Spiritualism, meditation and other aspects of Hinduism. Back in 60s Rishikesh gained instant and fleeting fame as the place where the Beatles came to be with their Guru, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. This place has witnessed some of the big time celebrities like John F kennedy Jr., Madonna, Goldie Hawn coming here to understand and learn Yoga & Mediatation.
